Gomes completes Marseille switch

England international Angel Gomes has completed a free transfer to Marseille.

Gomes, a graduate of Manchester United’s academy, has spent the last five years at Lille, with a season spent on loan at Boavista.

He was linked with a return to the Premier League earlier in the summer, but the midfielder has instead elected to stay in Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old reached an agreement in principle with Marseille in June, and has now officially joined Roberto De Zerbi’s team.

Gomes played 134 times for Lille in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 19 assists.

That tally of assists is bettered only by Jonathan David (24), now of Juventus, among Lille players since Gomes made his debut for the club in 2021.

Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 last season, 19 points behind runaway champions Paris Saint-Germain.
